Rivalry week fills stadiums. U.S. News rank gets forwarded in group chats before the ink is dry. Admit rates are a blood sport. So why is there no scoreboard for the one competition that actually affects the planet nine campuses share? We built one.
The premise
Every UC campus fights for the same things: the higher rank, the better recruiting class, the bigger name. That instinct is real, it is earned, and it is not a bad thing. It has simply never been pointed at the planet.
Berkeley and UCLA duel year after year for the title of best public university in the country, and every campus in between quotes its own U.S. News rank the moment it improves.
UCLA alone has stacked up more NCAA team championships than almost any school in the country. Rivalry week is not a metaphor here. It is a campus holiday.
Nobel laureates, patent counts, admit rates under 10%: the UC system markets its prestige as hard as any Ivy, and every campus wants its own line in that pitch.
Seven real, publicly reported sustainability metrics exist for every campus, buried across nine separate PDFs, with no ranking connecting them. Until now.
If UC students can turn a football game into a rivalry, they can turn sustainability into one too.
The scoreboard nobody built until now
Each campus was ranked from 1 to 9 on every metric using public UCOP, STARS, and LEED data; the totals below add those seven ranks. A perfect score would be 7.
Two campuses tie for first with two completely different playbooks. That contrast is the story of this project.

No campus is good at everything. The shape of the radar is the pattern. Outer edge means a better rank on that metric.

What the leaders have in common
Clear institutional commitments create accountability and guide long term environmental decisions. The top campuses codify their targets.
On site renewable generation cuts fossil fuel dependence and drives down campus greenhouse emissions. It is the single biggest lever in the emissions metric.
Robust diversion programs minimize landfill use and turn recycling and reuse into default behavior rather than effort.
Integrating climate literacy across programs means graduates carry sustainability into their careers. Engagement is a metric because it compounds.
Standing carbon neutrality commitments sustain efficiency and clean energy investment through leadership and budget cycles.
The point of this whole project
UC students have never needed a reason to compete. Give this generation a scoreboard for the thing that actually determines the planet they inherit, and watch how fast nine campuses start playing to win.
Methods & honesty notes
Method. Nine UC campuses were ranked from 1 to 9 on each of seven metrics from public data; the overall score is the unweighted sum of ranks, and the lowest total wins. It is simple by design: transparent, reproducible, and easy to argue with, which is the point of a ranking meant to spark competition.
Emissions is a composite proxy. The score combines Scope 1 to 3 emissions and renewable energy use per acre, using each campus's own 2023 sustainability report figures. It mixes units, so treat it as a rough intensity proxy that orders campuses, not a physical quantity. UCLA's small campus footprint of 419 acres is why its score is such an outlier.
STARS air & climate was normalized. Campuses reported under two different STARS versions, with sections worth 8 or 16 points, so scores were converted to percent of possible before ranking. That is why they are comparable.
Targets are set by each campus. The energy and water metrics measure each campus against its own goal; some 2025 water goals were approximated where no exact figure was published, as marked in the grid tooltips. The master ranking used absolute differences; this site displays percentages for comparison across campuses.
The framing is ours. "The Other Rivalry" is an editorial lens added to the original research. It is a way to make nine campuses take a real, sourced sustainability comparison as seriously as they take rank, football, and admit rates. The underlying data and methodology are unchanged from the original study.
